Tyres
« on: March 09, 2020, 02:06:07 PM »
I’m looking at changing the hi-milers off the RFSV, I like the BFG KO A/T Tyers, are they suited for the splits or I’m in better off going for the wolf rims?
I need some ideas
Cheers

i would go with new tubeless rims so you can get tubeless tyres, which will give you more range to choose from and are arguably a better tyre .  I know some people run tubeless tyres on the old rims and have no problems but I would personally feel safer with rims designed for tubeless tyres and fitting tubeless tyres to tube rims "may" invalidate insurance and be illegal etc.

A word of caution on the wolf rims, they are 6 1/2 inches wide, civilian rims are usually whole inches ie 6 or 7 inches.  Getting 6 1/2 may limit your tyre choice if going wide, or if you may wish to go wide later.
Consider the dynamic rims or similar, not quite as nice looking but painted olive drab they don't look bad and you will then have more tyre choice.

I purchased wolf rims and I am very happy with them and he Coopers 25585r16 tyres on them, but I might pick dynamic 7 inch if I made the choice again, so I had more tyre choice in the future.
To get the extra width on a 6 1\2 inch rim, tyre choice is very limited outside mud terrain tyres, so I ended up with tyres that were more expensive than I hoped.  25585r16 was he widest I was happy to go on  6 1/2 inch rim, without impacting the speedo too much, and fitting under the original guards.  Look at he availability of the tyre sizes you may want before picking your rims.

I think it comes down to what you want to set the vehicle up for. If it is for weekend outings and occasional local trips then tubeless would be the way to go with lots of tyre choices. If serious remote outback is the setup, the split rims with 10 plus ply tyres offer more reliability. People always  say you can plug your flats with tubeless tyres , I have found traveling remote over many years probably only 20% of flats could have been repaired with plugs.

I have the 6x6 and tried tubeless on the steel rims but was a terrible idea, bought the wolf rims and running Bridgestone muddies with no issues.

Yerriong  I agree, but where do you get 10 ply plus tyres that fit the tubed rims (or tubeless rims) and preferably are a bit wider than the High Milers?

I like the idea of splitties but I didn't find anything as wide as I wanted.  I would also go muddies if it was predominantly an off roader, but mine is a daily driver as well.

cheers

Hi David there are numerous 10 or more ply tyre options, in a little wider profile there are some that I have seen Bridgestone was one sorry I dont recall details, most are truck applications, I have been running Bridgestone M857 14 and 12 ply on splits on my 6x6 for desert travel for a few years and am happy with them. I did the very same combo Craig.  6 x Wolf rims from KLR on sale with 255 BFG Muddies and 225 for the 2 spares to fit in the double rear carrier. Also keeping all the original split rims to stay with the vehicle.

Massive difference in the stability and the crazy wheel shake at 90km plus is now gone now the wheels can be balanced and noise reduction is massively improved and can have a conversation now at speed.  The only drawback is the muddies are nowhere near as good on soft sand as the hi milers, but otherwise extremely happy.
