The old and badly corroded slave starting socket finally came out, not without a fight mind you. It also left a rust through hole where sand had packed in behind it.

I have already restored a mint replacement as this original is only fit for parts.

Cab clearance side lamps came apart surprisingly easy despite the rust. A long term soak in WD40 seemed to work out for a change !

Lenses are superglued together and once cleaned and re-coloured with clear red and clear orange model paints they should be perfectly reuseable. Not so with the light fittings themselves which fell to pieces.

The horn button & emblem cleaned up well. Might even add some colour to the IH emblem .

The steering wheel is an early unribbed type and in reasonably good condition apart from some cracks and a split near the hub.

As an experiment I am filling in with fibreglass resin. Hopefully it will sand back and look original. If not I have a spare (slightly smaller) wheel from a teaspoon tipper to convert or a ribbed wheel from the wreckers...

Once I opened the steering box & colums several litres of clear water poured out !

As everything is still greasy I’m hoping it will be OK as the purchase of a nos box I arranged last year fell through.

Didn't know about the starting socket; we just used jumper leads. Where on the truck was it located?

Hey Charlie,

It's below the driver and behind his left heel on the vertical 'step' in the floor pan.

It's the reason most trucks had the big ugly red/white warning about being negative earth which was painted on the engine cover.

Bit more steering box tinkering. The cover cleaned up nicely but the indicator switch assembly is a bit worse for wear. Some small parts tumbled out when the steering wheel came off. It’s also missing the lever and has been full of dirt for decades.

I will still try to save it if I can.

In other news I received and excellent and authentic stencil set from a fellow REMLR member and former Army colleague. Very much appreciated !

Trying to save and restore my early unribbed Mk3 steering wheel.

I’ve used fibreglass resin to fill the several cracks. Hopefully once sanded after a second treatment it will be blended in and should be flexible enough not to crack again.
