Mule M274 Australian Army
« on: February 08, 2019, 05:11:55 PM »
Hi All

Does any one know how many Mule's M274 the Aus Army purchase from the US Army?
They are a listed as an Australian Army Vehicle in the Australian Army Journal of 1960.
I know they had them is PNG in the mid 60's.
I would like to know the ARN numbers as well?

Brad

Wrote an article about them for Army Motors many years ago. Usual thing: did the research, wrote the article, moved on to the next topic.

Serials are visible in AWM126, now on line.

Do you have a line on acquiring one, or have acquired one? If so, be VERY careful: as I said, bugger of a thing to handle!

Mike.

A shame the pics are no longer attached to this forum posts.  It does mention the Mule was RHD.

There is/was another Mule owned by a VVMC member that has made appearances at Corowa, but I think it was an import, not ex-Aust. Was for sale at one point, where has it gone?

"there was one on gumtree in Sydney about six weeks ago" - maybe that's why Ambo 6x6/Brad was asking for info??

Yes Mike you are correct I purchased it.  Hence the Interest.  The one at Corowa 2 years ago was an import from the USA and should be on display at the Air show in 3 weeks time in Melbourne.  The one I got has unreadable data plate and is a Baifield MFR.  The Australian army one's were Willys 1960 models.

It has the dark green paint under the olive drab paint.  It was stated by the seller that the farmer purchased 3 from the army years ago, 2 went to Army Museums (unknown which ones) and he purchased the 3rd one back in 2000 ish.

I'm searching the ARN books so one day I may find it/them if the later models existed.

Brad

Plus the other numbers from the 70's onwards in the 2x-xxx/3x-xxx range that the AWM doesn't have, although I think they will be too late for Mule regos.

As an aside, would it be possible that further registrations of M274 Mules were not listed as "B" Vehicles (or unrestricted road-going vehicles), and that they may have been registered as plant or equipment (limited use vehicles)?
