Wheel sizes 6x6 and suitable replacement size
« on: September 16, 2018, 08:15:22 PM »
Hi all,
I'm looking at picking up my 6x6 ex ambulance this coming weekend.

I have found a set of wheels for sale. They are 235/85/16 BFG (Goodrich) KM2 Mud Terrain. They are mounted on Dynamic Steel rims that are apparently rated to 1400kg per wheel so should be well strong enough.

My question is....

How does this compare to the standard wheels in circumference as I would like to achieve slightly quicker highway speeds?
I assume they will fit under the arch at that width?
I know the original tyres are 16" but what width and profile are they?

Regards
Adrian

Need more than differen tyres to increase the highway speed... ;D

Total drivetrain transplant maybe?

And improved aero? :)

Ps Yes I have a 6x6 ambulance....

235/85R16 are the same rolling diameter as a 7.50R16 Adrian so will make no difference to the road speed.

I think I saw a post somewhere cautioning the use of non oem wheels on the 6x6 due to possible failures due to the weight of the vehicles

Yes, there has been some discussion in the past.
The 6x6s also tend to drag the wheels causing flexing and fatigue of the rims. One of mine has cracked.

Yep found the post re wheek failure. Sobering reminder of modifications going wrong.

I think i like the look of the standard rims and will eventually fit up 255 85 16 rubber as from what I've read and heard that's the maximum that will fit.

Cheers

The standard Perentie rim (ie 6.0x16) will take a 235/85-16 tyre at a maximum. If you'd like to go to a 255/85-16, you will need a set of 6.5x16 rims, of which there are several genuine LR versions, but discussion is again divided on whether they should be used under a 6x6.

Hey 303,
Thanks for the reply.

I agree with your comments as since my last reply i did some further research and there are some concerning comments in regards to cracking wheels.

I think at this stage i will just wear out what I've got. I only do around 8k a year and theybhave about 60% of tread left so there's a few years left in them.

Thanks again mate
