Yet another new No.5 trailer owner
« on: March 27, 2017, 01:40:21 PM »
Hi everyone,
Yet another new No.5 trailer first time ex military owner! I am going to tow it behind my Landr̶o̶v̶e̶r̶cruiser 80 series. I have the rotating Nato Hitch. Also have a 12 pin Nato socket coming which I will install on the truck (nobody will be able to ask to borrow the trailer, "what a shame the plug wont fit your socket"  ;) )

I thought I would post up some info on this one to update any databases.
Won this one from Grays in Brisbane 15.3.17, the Grays Auction sold it as ARN 173-436, however I believe someone somewhere messed up the paperwork as it has written in paint pen on the license plate holder and drawbar ARN 173-171 which I believe would be correct. Unfortunately no service record book.
ARN 173-171 makes it chassis number 1511.
Actual chassis number as stamped is 95 and tub number is 499. When I register it I will use 'ADI1511' as chassis number in case the chassis with 1511 stamped comes up.

I need to get a canopy bow made up, source a canopy and a spare wheel.
It came with the rear towing pin which I believe is pretty rare

If anyone has info on the unit serial number, the skull stencil and what 1AC means would be awesome!

I have a question for fellow QLD'rs who have filled in the self assessment form to register the trailer.

They ask for the axle rating  (48mm diam axle + parallel bearings = 1600kg?)
Tow ball coupling rating        ( I have been suggested 2250kg or 2500kg for lunette ring? Cant find this info anywhere)
and filling in the trailer measurements section would kind of make in unregisterable with the overhang from the rear tow point and stoplight bucket etc?
Just wondering what numbers others have used on the paperwork.

Sorry for the longish post and questions, but any and all help appreciated! If the answers are anywhere they definitely here.
Thanks Guys

G'day Taggsy,

The Christmas tree 5397 is the UDC number for D Coy (QLD) 1st Military Police Battalion.

Hope that helps ?

Cheers,

Mick

Thats awesome Mick, thanks for that. Knowing who the trailer belonged to kind of gives it an identity. So the stenciled face/skull in the triangle would be the 'logo' associated with that unit?

Thanks for the offer, but from what I can gather they are like Hens teeth so reckon I will hold on to it  :). I could give you something for the wheel though if your interested?

Hi and welcome. I also had a bid on the Brisbane trailers but luckily didn't win one as my wife wouldn't be happy, I already have 2 and a Land rover. One of my trailers is 1527 which is close to yours. I also have an 80 series as my daily drive which occasionally tows one of the #5's.  You'll find there is a big difference in the wheel track and the short tow bar makes it very difficult to back. Anyway, I still love the trailers for what they are. Hang onto that rear pin. Both mine have pins but as you pointed out, they are rare. When I registered mine, I put down 750kg for everything.

Thanks for the info Marlin. Yes I knew the wheel track was different, but for what we do hopefully wont be much of an issue. I will drag it up the beach as a test to see how things go and how much difference it makes though.

Taggsy, this post might shed some light on some things.

I just purchased my first No5 off gumtree off a bloke in Brisbane. He didn't have any of the log books or anything and it was already registered. But it did have the numbers 173-322 written on it as you can see in the photos, which would have meant I had chassis number 1777. Turns out my chassis number is 1789 as indicated in the photos, which means it's the ARN 173-436 - the one you apparently bought last year hahah. The guy I bought this off has had it for about 7-8 years he reckons - I think it was first registered in 2011.

Hi Taggsy welcome to REMLR - I, like you, have a No 5 and it is an excellent trailer, and,   I, like you, (with a chuckle) have kept the original lunette and 12 pin Nato plug, one problem is though, I have mates who also have the same ex army hitch and 12 pin nato plugs on their vehicles too!  (Thus still gets borrowed!)   Enjoyed your post!  STDDIVER    :D

Hi Taggsy,

The number 5397 is the Unit Serial Number (USN), not the UDC. The whole 'tree' including the number, is the Unit Recognition Mark.

The UDC (Unit Distribution Code?) is in internal Army 'address' or accounting code for the unit and is 5 digits. 1 MP Company's UDC is/was 36608.  Another example would be 1st Armoured Regiment. The USN is 5338, while the UDC is 39730.

You will not find the UDC applied to a vehicle other than for temporary delivery-to-unit purposes.

Nice trailer.

Mike

Hi Mike,

thanks for picking up my error.  My advice is either the UDC or ERN is used as the DN. I`m not a loggy but according to the list as at 2014 the codes are:

 1 Armd`s No`s  are : UDC 39730, ERN 52280 and DN 3973.

1 MP Coy no longer is on the ORBAT it now being part of 1 MP BN.
The QLD Det codes are UDC 53979, ERN 91316 and DN 5397.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks, Mick, for the clarification. Sounds about right, which means that I think I mixed 1AR and SOA numbers in my post, but I'm away at the moment so cannot check until next week. Maybe you could look on your list?

Mike
