New Land Rover Perentie owner with mechanical question.
« on: August 14, 2018, 10:31:20 PM »
Hi new to forum and new to Land Rover. Just purchased an ex-Australian Air Force 4x4 Perentie and I have a question about availability of replacement parts if mechanical issues arise. Particularly the engine (Isuzu DB1) and the LT95A tranny as well as transfer case. It looks as though engine parts are easy to come by but transmission looks to be another story. Does anyone know of a supplier of replacement parts who ships to US and options for replacing transmissions. Also is there a service recommendation and fluid type for the LT95A transmission. The vehicle will more than likely be driven occasionally and rarely off road. Thanks.

Congrats on your acquisition and welcome to our forum - I hope you are aware of all the workshop manual resources in the library on the remlr.com website.

Someone will hopefully be along before too long to answer your questions on parts - what do you need?

As far as gearbox oil goes - take care NOT to use what is marketed as "gearbox oil".

While there are other alternatives, the simplest rule to follow is to use the same oil in the gearbox as is used in the engine.

Ask as many questions as you need to :)

Thanks so much. Like I said I’m new to the Land Rover and just trying to educate myself if a problem should arise. The vehicle has the military log and it appears was well kept. It has a lengthy entry in 08 of a Tenix overhaul which I understand is a good thing.  The buyer I purchased it from imported it nearly 2 years ago and drove it gently. I like to do my own services if possible but the bigger jobs I’ll need a mechanic and these aren’t too common over here in North Carolina so it’s important that I know my options. Thanks again and I look forward to being part of the forum!

On parts, you should have a chat with Bill at Great Basin Rovers.
http://gbrutah.com/

Also, lots of parts can be sourced from the UK.

On parts that are peculiar to the Perenties, I'm sure most Aussie suppliers would be happy to ship to the US.

I'm trying to train Dave from BCC at being a Perentie specialist.

Thank you for the links. Very helpful. I’m having trouble accessing the service manuals on the site though the iPad. I’ll try on a regular computer but in the mean time was wondering of service intervals for oil changes, transmission gear box oil service, etc..

Hi Eric, see if this doc addresses what you are looking for :)

(if you lookup afmsafety there are lots of docs for all the LR variants)

Thanks Dugite! I really appreciate the help. I’m thinking of doing an oil change on the engine as well as transmission and transfer case service since I’m not really sure when they were done last. Is it as straight forward as drain and fill? Or is it more involved particularly with transmission and transfer case? It appears the same oil is used in all 3. In fact it looks like the OMD-115 is used for lots of things on this vehicle. Any guidance is appreciated.

Also, does anyone know if you can get OMD-115 oil in the US?

I, and some other owners use:

https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/products/truck-and-bus/engine-oil/castrol-rx/product-range/rx-super-15w-40.html

This is probably superior to OMD115 on the basis that a multigrade oil is usually going to be more useful in a practical sense.

I would suggest checking the specs in the link and see what local oil available to you fits those specs.

Awesome, thanks Dugite. I can get that in the states. It appears that since the Tenix rebuild only 23500 KM have been put on the truck. The EMEI service instructions call for service of the transmission and transfer case at 20000KM to T (top up) and at 40000KM to drain and refill.  Can I assume that since there are no leaks topping up is discretionary? Any harm in pulling fill plug and checking? I know I’m being overly cautious but this is a new beast to me and I don’t want to take anything for granted. Thanks for any and all help!

Thanks Bruce. Good to know that parts are available in the US. I need to find a good mechanic in the Charlotte area that can work on these.
