Gday all,
I scored a trailer at the local SA auction.
The Auction and frontline showed it as 101303 (no log). However i cant seem to find these details anywhere on it.
Any ideas?
101-303 is the Registration Number (or number plate) of the trailer. It won't be stamped, engraved or plated anywhere on the trailer. What you might find are various 2, 3, or 4 digit numbers on the chassis or tub. However, as the trailer appears in the photograph to have undergone an extensive end-of-life rebuild by Tenix, as well as the possibility of many other smaller refreshes over the years, the numbers you find will almost certainly NOT be the original numbers that were on the trailer originally plated as 101-303 back in 1963.
The Army had an odd (to civilian eyes) approach to vehicle ID being solely the Number Plate (or ARN). Serial numbers, chassis numbers and VINs have been swapped around over the decades after repairs, rebuilds or re-configurations but the constant identity followed the number plate, not the chassis or serial number. This is the opposite to the approach used by the civil authorities, and can often cause confusion.
If you are allowed to nominate the trailer's chassis number for SA Rego, I would recommend keeping 101303 in there, and maybe add your initials.
Oh and BTW, I am in fits of ecstacy over the number 101-303 being a 16 Air Defence ARN , even if it is just a trailer number. Put it on a 101 Rapier truck and I'm in!
