Series 2 Ambulance Prorotypes
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:52:23 PM »
It seems that I have to rewrite a little history.

We know recently that Prototype 106-947 with the winch and hard top went to Little Desert Nature Lodge and was modified as a tour vehicle.  this was the 1 of 2 rebuit into the white bodied prototype.

106-952 however was thought to have been pulled down to make the white bodied vehicle, yet I was given one account of a prototype ending up as a camper.  Today updating ARN entries for the stack of photos that were uploaded by Dave Blears from a gentleman whose name embarrasingly ecapes me at the moment, shows 106-952 in a yard of vehicles, and an image of it's data plate.  The other vehicles in the yard are almost all white, and the number plate, although blown out in the photo, can be made out to be BTE-453 (perhaps BIE-453).  Not sure what state that makes it, but it looks normal series 2 standard, so both pbvious were made into regular series 2 vehicles in the end.

I hope this helps :)

Black over white (image inverted).

It could be an 8 rather than a B.

Except that most number plates of that period (late 80's, early 90's I would say from the photo) would have been 3 letters then 3 numbers ;)

Richard,

That looks like the Land Rover dealers yard  in Blackburn Victoria.

He was next to but separate from the infamous Four Wheel Drives mob.

Forgotten the name of the bloke at the moment (Don Mc Killop or some thing similar ?)

I'm sure that someone else from Vic will recognise the yard as well. It always had plenty of interesting vehicles, including some that I wish I had now!

That would make it likely a Victorian  number plate starting with a B, which is correct for early 80's Victoria.

More history sorted!

Cheers,

Mike.

I would have said that it was a chance to have been the other prototype that ended up in little desert if it hadn't been for the photo of the data plate!

All interesting history.  Must ammend some ambulance pages today while I remember.

G'day Phoenix  :)

The plate looks to be Thin Green on White, which would make it Victoria, as NSW in that series was Black on Yellow and Qld had White on Black enamel (N,O,P,)and later Green on White reflective which faded and flaked.

A more expanded pic of the yard showing the plates of other vehicles might narrow down the State  :)

cheers

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before... sorry if it has ...

This is an AWM video of the Tropical Trials 1960/61. Amongst other vehicles, it depicts the prototype ambulances tested during the trials.

Starts at 2:06:08.  Could be further in as well but I didn't watch it all.

Thanks for the link Agas - well worth watching!

There is a prototype International truck as well by the look of things; perhaps a Mk 1,
