6X6 rear axle driveshaft mod
« on: September 05, 2015, 07:10:38 PM »
Made this steel bracket up yesterday to encase the centre pillow bearing on the rear axle driveshaft. My vehicle was missing the rear shafts when I bought it and there was evidence that the shaft had disintegrated after a bearing failure I suspect. I have heard of a few have this happen. If you look at the bearing it is encased in a rubber pillow and this is bolted onto the chassis cross member by a light metal frame. The bearing is factory lubed and has no provision for servicing or lubrication so with a bit of water/dust over time it runs dry and fails. If you don't catch it early it will result in shaft failure. This bracket will ensure that the shafts don't flog around and disintegrate if the bearing fails and I don't pick it up early. The bearing is replaceable if you pick up the vibrations before everything self destructs. The bearing Number is 88507 and readily available reasonably cheap. I would advise  6X6 owners to check the centre bearing especially if you have any vibrations in the rear end.

Nice work Brian, I have unbolted my rear tail sharft from the diff  and chained it up to the crossmember. Also unpluged the air to it. Had to join the little pipes to make the gearbox one work. I dont see anyneed to run a rear tail sharft for a maybe.. It still pulls the van fine. Thats all I need..
That steel strap would do the job if it failed for sure..

Thanks Bob. I wonder if anyone has installed free wheeling hubs on the rear diff - that would save wear and tear on that driveshaft and the diff.

I looked at FWHs but they were from the US and freight was up there, so didnt worry.
That flange holder looks the goods, shouldnt come away easy if there is a problem..
Good one...

I am going to keep my eyes out for a set - might give them a try instead of windmilling the rear diff with the Detroit locker in it.
Yes,if the tailshaft gets past that retainer I made it will have already taken out the cross member it is bolted to!!! :)

Does the centre bearing (88507) come with the rubber bit, or is it a separate part number ?

That's just the bearing itself. The rubber bit is a part of the LR part number but I haven't nailed it down yet. I found a replacement on ebay in the US and it's still in transit so I will report back when I get it - hopefully it's the same thing. Certainly looks like it by the dimensions and photo and a side cheaper than through LR - about $100 all up including freight.

What rubber did you use, as you say yours didn't have the tail shafts, or was the rubber still there ?

I bought a new one complete with rubber and casing, but being me I pulled it apart first to see what bearing is in it - I like to keep a spare of things like this that you know are going to stuff up one day. also found that the flange is a S3 stage 1 front output flange off an LT95.
