Starting with the involvement of the Australian Army Training Team - Vietnam (which they commemorate on 22 July) and continuing on to the completion of our involvement officially on 11th January 1973 (except for the Embassy protection detail which left in June 1973, and remembering the AATTV which completed service in Dec 1972, a continuous service of 10 1/2 years!) ) it is now 50 years since the Australian commencement of action in Vietnam.

From the time of the arrival of the first members of the Team in 1962 almost 60,000 Australians, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel, served in Vietnam; 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded.

The Vietnam war was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent in Australia since the conscription referendums of the First World War. Many draft resisters, conscientious objectors, and protesters were fined or gaoled, while some soldiers met a hostile reception on their return home.

To the veterans of any service, but especially at this time to those who served during the conflict, THANKYOU.

To the families of those veterans, THANKYOU.

Make sure that sometime soon, if the opportunity arises. you thank a veteran
for their service. Be it a shake of the hand, buying a beer or coffee or some other way - remember what they have risked for our lifestyle today.

I know its not much, and its 50 years but....

THANKS TO ALL YOU VETERANS ON THIS SITE

Spare a thought for the 521 who paid the ultimate price

for the over 3,000 who were physically wounded,
and the untold thousands who were mentally scarred
and for all their families and friends.

THANKYOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SERVICE.
