Just found this when looking for info on trailers on duckduckgo, mentions bodywork from Varleys in Newcastle -Hunter Valley and pre-delivery work.

Minister for Defence Materiel – "1000th Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon delivered to Defence"
24 June 2013

Minister for Defence Materiel Dr Mike Kelly AM MP today announced the delivery of the 1000th Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon under Project LAND 121 Phase 3A.

The new G-Wagons, along with Australian-made trailers, are being rolled out to Army and Royal Australian Air Force units as part of LAND 121 ‘Project Overlander’, a $7.5 billion program delivering more than 7500 protected and unprotected vehicles to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) over the next decade.

“The new G-Wagons will help prepare ADF personnel for operations and provide the flexibility to undertake a wide range of tasks in difficult off-road conditions, while ensuring that Australian soldiers are better prepared and equipped,” Dr Kelly said.

The new variants are used as tactical training vehicles and for a wide range of support tasks.

“G-Wagon variants include utility, ambulance, surveillance and reconnaissance, mobile command post variants, and even a canine variant to transport military working dogs and their handlers,” Dr Kelly said.

Dr Kelly congratulated Mercedes-Benz on the delivery of the first 1000 G-Wagons, adding that the G-Wagon represents a big step forward for the ADF’s tactical training capability.

“Today’s handover of the 1000th G-Wagon represents an important milestone at the Mercedes-Benz facility in Mulgrave, Victoria,” Dr Kelly said.

“At the Mulgrave facility, modules and tray bodies provided by G.H. Varley in Newcastle are integrated with the vehicles and pre-delivery work is undertaken.”

A total of 2146 G-Wagons are being rolled out to ADF units between July 2012 and June 2016.

Here's another mention on the Aussie content with a story about the "final" G-Wagen Sation Wagon (sic):

http://www.defence.gov.au/dmo/NewsMedia/DMOBulletin/Final-G-Wagon-Sation-Wagon-Delivered-To-Defence

"BRIG Kohl’s visit to Mulgrave included a short tour of the Mercedes-Benz integration facility. It is here that the base G-Wagon platforms, which are manufactured in Austria on the company’s sole G-Wagon production line, are integrated with specialist modules to deliver the mission-system variants being rolled out to Army units.

"The modules being integrated at Mulgrave are supplied to Mercedes-Benz by G.H. Varley, a family-owned company from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, with 125 years’ experience in light and heavy engineering."

+ info on numbers
"[As of June 2016] Mercedes-Benz has supplied over 1700 G-Wagons to Defence, including 440 station-wagon variants, of which 1300 have already been rolled out to units.

"The G-Wagon roll-out started back in July 2012 with deliveries to the 7th Brigade in Brisbane. Since then the roll-out has broadened to include the 1st Brigade in Darwin, with NORFORCE, the 51st Far North Queensland Regiment and the 3rd Brigade due to start receiving vehicles in the coming months.

"Currently proceeding at a rate of about 60 vehicles a month, the G-Wagon roll-out is expected to conclude in 2016."

So 7.5 billion for 7,500 vehicles means $1,000,000 each over their life...

Roll out of the G Wagen concluded in late 2016.

There have been in-service opinions good and bad about the G-Wagen.

The problem I have heard about numerous times is that the electric loom is both complex and 'fragile'. I am confident RAEME have the hassles getting sorted.

This week's Army News has a good supplement about the Battles of Coral and Balmoral in 1968 in SVN as an ANZAC Commemoration extra, but it also has a cartoon having a dig at the billion dollar G-Wagens.

I'd still love to have a 6x6 G-Wagon, though.

I haven't seen that cartoon Ross, thanks for posting ,  it explains how they are modifying the fleet of MBs with the addition of jump starters - evidently they can't be left unused for more than 7 days without flattening the battery.

Sounds a bit like a alarm system issue ?

My work has ordered one the the single cab tray backs to evaluate as a possible replacement of our 79 series cruiser fleet when we cant get them soon

Yep my fingerprints are on that one. A very capable vehicle and one that solves the cruiser fleet recurring issues particularly around the weight problems. But not a cheap option. Be interesting to see how the trial washes up.

QPWS seems to have scads of them, I passed 3 in convoy just the other day. I have no idea where the money comes from.
