Decoding International & Dodge Truck Models
« on: June 26, 2014, 10:22:31 AM »
Hello All,

Can someone please let me know which International & Dodge Civilian style trucks can be driven on a car licence? From memory Internationals had models such as the  AA160 ...  C 100 ... C 1210 ... C 1500 .. C 1600 + Then I think they had a similar number code after the new D series of vehicles.

Were any of the 4 x 4 Internationals such as ex-Rural Fire Units able to be driven on a car licence? If so which ones?

Dodges had  D5N 400,  D5N 500 +

I am looking at being able to narrow down the search for a vehicle that does not need yearly thorough motor vehicle inspections and the need to pay for higher rates of registration. I am in Queensland by the way so our registration rules may be different to other states and territories.

So what International C to D Series and Dodge D5N earlier or later series vehicle codes should I be looking out for/

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind Regards
Lionel

Lionel,

IIRC, the Inters (AA/AB, etc.) use the number as an indicator of the GVM in pounds.  For example, an AB160 has a gross of 16000 pounds (7,257 kg), the AB120 is 12000 pounds (5443 kg). Our car licence and rego has a break point at 4500 kgs, so you will need an LR/MR licence to drive them and also have annual machinery inspections and commercial rego.

I am also interested in an old truck, but like you, it must have a GVM of 4500 kg (just under 10,000 pounds) or less OR be capable of being derated.

Just for info, the Inter AB 110,C1100,D1110 models are all single wheel, and register and drive as utes.Dodge 114 similar. If you get a 1200 0r 1300 with single wheels,it also registers as a ute.The 4x4s are mostly single wheel. If the rating plate in the door says over 4500,take it out.Its missing.I had a dual wheel 1300 registered as a ute for many years.Even got sent up for inspection by the scalies once, brakes no good ,but it got thru. The yearly inspection effectively adds another $100+ to your rego.Dual wheel to single is a problem,as the front hubs are different.Regards John.
