2 Cav signs at RHQ establishment in 1970
« on: June 17, 2014, 09:32:11 AM »
Am wanting to find out the unit serial and the formation sign for 2 Cavalry Regiment when the Regimental HQ was established at Holsworthy in Nov 1970.

Many will know that 2 Cav was initially formed with two CMF units A Sqn 4/19 PWLH and B Sqn 2/14 QMI but the unit serials do not exist in the Steven Taubert's Formation Signs book from 1960 until 1977.

Did the squadron based on Galipoli lines Holsworthy wear ARA or CMF formation signs and which one (div)?

In 1977 the unit serial was 32, the same as 4/19 PWLH, 10 LH,  3/9 SAMR etc but a friend believes the serial was something like 106.  Does anyone know what the 2 Cav serial was between 1970 and 1977?

Photos would be great.

BTW: we want the signs to display on vehicles for Reserve Forces Day parade next month.

We want to get the signs correct because there will be hundreds of old soldiers present in the parade.

Diana, why don't you contact the battalion Association? You might even find the bloke who painted the sign. ;)

Hi Dave

I know there are a few ex tankies here, and at least one ex 2Cav (1980s) so thought I ask here first.

Theres nothing more certain than if I put the wrong formation and unit signs, there will be a particular 1/19 RSM who will comment.  He was drilling the bearers on Sunday.  A few of them need to return to boot camp!  ;D

Diana,

Actually, 1 Cav was formed from the ARA Sqns of 4/19 and 2/14 (A Sqn in both instances) on 19 November 1965, then on 24 November 1966 officially changed to 2 Cav (to avoid confusion with 1 Armd...).

I've got an image of a Saladin serving with 1 Cav somewhere which I think shows the Unit sign. I'll look on the morrow: too late here now.

1/19?

The 1/19 Regiment (Infantry) also called the 'Bushmans Rifles' was a National service unit formed back in the 60's cheers Dennis :)

Hmmm .... can't find an image that shows the Unit sign, sorry - the only front on shot credited to 1 Cav has the unit sign in glare and unreadable.

1/19 .... ah, yes, Wiked-pedia have an entry about the unit. Shows how out of date I am .... the last I knew, 1 and 19 were delinked in 1939-40, and later disabanded. Only 1 Bn was re-raised as 1 Commando Coy in the late 50s. Hadn't caught up with the raising of 1/19 in 1970 as a CMF unit (if Wikwed-pedia is to be believed...)

During the 80,s 2 cav regularly used the Bushmans Rifles as assault troops as there were only about n14 in the regs at that time. The unit was made up almost entirely off duty cops and teachers :)

Hi Mike

Yes I did know about the earlier dates, but they didn't have a regimental HQ till 1970 and the first regimental parade is considered November 1970.

I note the "this post has not been active for more than 120 days" warning.

I was enlisted to the 4th/19th PWLH for a couple of years.
I also volunteer at the Gippsland Armed Forces museum.

We have most of that info in the archives. I can probably look up a few things for you if you still haven't found them.
