That's right Geoff, it's called an engine stop motor and operates via its attached cable to open the fuel on the injector pump when the ign is turned to "on" (accompanied by a small whirring sound).

(an ignition linked method of stopping the engine on civvie vehicles was required after the early 80s when drivers apparently no longer knew how to stop this type of diesel engine by manually operating the engine stop cable)

It does not seem to cause many problems but I know others have had to source the motors from o/s.

You can see it in your Perentie near the driver's side of the firewall in the engine bay. It lives in a white vinyl bag and has a cable going to the Injector pump.

As above, correctly called an EDIC motor. Electric Diesel Injection Control. Fuse is on the firewall, an easy way to disable the vehicle.

So today I played with that lonely little fuse on the driver side in the engine bay on or near the firewall (hanging off the pair of relays on a cable tie).

Its a 20A blade fuse.

I say played because I read elsewhere it is a way to kill ignition - without the fuse the donk will crank but not fire up.
I removed the fuse and sure enough it will crank but not fire up.

The fuse holder is exposed to the elements, not directly, but just like the front plastic blinker and parker lenses, water and dust find their way in because its a cheap and nasty plasticy design that probably costs them 20c.

I checked the fuse for corrosion and made a note that I should renew it seeing how absolutely vital it is and how manky the fuse blades were. Could be ten years old who knows.

The donk was fine before this. Perfect.

So I put the fuse back and... the donk wouldn't fire up... it was just cranking. Oh no... what have I done? Maybe I spiked or upset the delicate engine computer up behind the dash? No, the Perentie is pre-engine management module thankfully. Very thankfully.

So I pulled the manky 20A fuse and put in a new 30A fuse I happened to have... and the engine then fired straight away.

Members should check this lonely engine side firewall fuse... for the sake of 'Murphy's Law' keep a few spare fuses in the vehicle just in case. These are spares that don't take up much room, but get caught without one when you need it...

you should find that with your CES kit there should ( ha ) be a small supply of them.

Without getting particular, if you think of the vehicles role, that fuse gets a lot of use.

:)

Surely there must be some embarrassing old stories in the ADF where some rupert in the middle of an AFX has a dead Landy (because of one of these EDIC fuses) and choppers in a spanner or gives RAEME support a call at 0300 or something only to find out its just a 10c fuse that needs swapping out.

And what similarly stupid ideas has the G-Wagon got lurking under the bonnet? Time will tell.

There are better blade fuse holders for sure. And "weatherproof".
Here is the Narva page: http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/blade-inline

I might upgrade.

Yep. Happened to me.
In the dark, no torch, no idea , the Perentie no start.
After a bit of advice on the forum, I found the fuse and cleaned it. Fired first time.

disabling the edic takes about 5 seconds on a bad day and the engine will just runnn.. my edic is faulty and stops working for days at a time.. so i run a manual bike cable to replace the wizbang electronic.... bike cable. Sure enough a few days later you hear the familiar edic whirring on startup again and i switch it back to electronic.. thats fiddly, and takes a good 30 seconds.

I tried to explain that to you at the expo but you were less than interested.. :P

 ;D
I remember you showing me the cable linkage on the side of the engine block.
I just had a look under the bonnet at it.
Maybe your fuse contact is intermittent because, as you said, it occassionally comes to life. I assume you are opening the bonnet and have to manually 'return' the cable you fitted when the EDIC comes good or do you have a return spring set up?

Thought I'd re-use this thread for what is it questions.

My question: On the LHS on my 110 engine bay there is a wire hanging down from the firewall next to the heater (in the same place where all the breather tubes terminate), it is black with a white trace in a black plastic tube and quite long.  There is no terminal at the end and seems to have been lying over the exhaust so is melted in places.

What does this wire do?

That'll be the brake pad wear sensor; it's probably not hooked up anyway.

That's the one, mine was also hanging in the breeze so now it's shortened up behind the air filter
