The Hawkei contract was 1300 million dollars, for 1100 vehicles. Thats a per-unit average cost of $1,181,818

The Hawkei name comes from an Australian death adder, which was named after Bob Hawke. Really?

Just the weapons systems that some of these will have cost over $500,000 each. It is probably a reasonable price for a armoured vehicle.

How do you figure that?

High mobility armoured vehicle as capable of any in the world and competitively priced. These things do 120km/hr over rough terrain

Well that makes it harder to figure. The straight average is about $600,000 ...but a $600,000 trailer is a garbage-in-garbage-out result.

I think that the guys riding in them would disagree.
What would you choose to be in in a combat zone, one of these or a G-wagon.

I'm going to get in trouble for this and upset someone I'm sure, but the term "winging pome" springs to mind.

Australia tax payers making Australian jobs and Australian vehicles for Australian troops. Sounds good to me?

Wasting tax payers money on projects that run late and over budget, I don't disagree with the vehicle being suitable for the job, change in warfare means up armour everything, next conflict and they may well be obsolete, time will tell.

The G Wagon is a great example of a perfectly good vehicle, that because we cant just buy off the shelf and have to change things, and not always for the good, we end up with a vehicle that is no longer capable of doing the job it was supposed to do in the first place.  Thus the tax payer ends up paying more and more to correct issues.

Yes these short lived projects do create a small number of jobs, that is good.

Another 'short lived project' that comes to mind is the Perentie ... an Aussie re-hash that turned an average design into a legend!

Hi Juddy,

re: Hawkei

don't mean to be rude but I think you're way off the mark on this one and it doesn't look like you are talking with any level of intimate knowledge on this subject - best not to put forward unsubstantiated  thoughts, doesn't really help anyone or the discussion.

Yes I have a level of knowledge on this one from a couple of different angles.............

Your not being rude FFRMAN at all, you have your say just like we all do. :)

The G Wagon is fact, and in the public domain, plus the chatter from defence employers backs this up.

Ok we're all getting confused between G-Wagen and Hawkeii

G-Wagen I agree is not optimal

Hawkeii - state of the art

both are for replacing the rovers, one a replacement that is really going backwards the other a quantum leap forward.

now let's look at the MAN trucks that are replacing the Mogs!
