103 was the Cavalry unit within a higher formation during the early 1960s: 4/19PWLH - Southern Command, 1/15RNSWL - Eastern Command, 2/14LH(QMI) - Northern Command, XLH - Western Command,  were all '103', with the Regular Army Squadron (A Sqn) often adopting and additional "A" suffix, hence 103A on A Sqn, 4/19PWLH vehicles. (The other Sqns were CMF and they apparently thought the Regs needed to show they were different!)

Hence, the LRs at XLH in Booger's images with '103' Unit signs.

3 Cav in 1946 or 1948??

103 denoted the Recce Regt RAAC of a Combat Support Group during the Pentropic period 1960-65. When a squadron was detached as Div Tps it used the 103A. After the return to the Tropical Warfare organisation in 1965 103 was used by the Div Tps Regt RAAC like 4/19 PWLH. 105 was an Army Tps Regt RAAC such as 8/13 VMR. There were also numbers in the 200's, like 206 for 1 Armd Regt and possibly 208 for 3 Cav Regt.

It should be noted that in the post 1965 period 103 also was used for an Army Tps Fd Regt RAA, on their red/blue background. 566 Sig Tp which was originally 4/19 PWLH Sig Tp used it in red on a white/blue background. It was Army Tps under comd 3 Sig Regt (3 Div) for administration.

G'day 63B, welcome.  Funny things Tac Signs.  Really confusing cometimes.
Now that you mention it.  I used to use the Callsign 63B in an earlier century when I was
in Recon Platoon in an Inf. Battalion in Queensland.

Where did you get yours ??    PM if you want.

regards, Greg Mac.

Funny that, mine was a recon pl in South Aust in the late 70's.

Which sort of reminds me that our gun buggies in Anti-Armour Pl had AA prefixed tactical markings, AA1, etc, we only had four.

63B,

"103 denoted the Recce Regt RAAC of a Combat Support Group during the Pentropic period 1960-65. When a squadron was detached as Div Tps it used the 103A."

Not quite: the Unit Sign '103A' was adopted by the A Sqn of the Cavalry Regiments when they were ARA, such as A Sqn 4/19PWLH, etc, to differentiate them from the CMF squadrons. It was unofficial.

Hi Mike,
I've got no idea how to attach stuff here, I'll get the hang of it eventually, but UNIT SERIAL NUMBERS FOR VEHICLE MARKING, dated 29 September 1960, covering the Pentropic division and organisation  shows that HQ Task Force when operating independently outside Australia was to use 40A indicating adv elms of HQ Div; that detachments of Adv Engr Stores Regts or Sqns were to use the normal number which would have been 286 for regts and 254 for sqns in the vulgar fraction form with the affix 'A', and finally -
RECCE REGT (a) 103    (a) Any elm allocated to a DIV is 103A

So if my Perentie was a RAAF unit, what sort of tac plates did the RAAF have?
I have its history, so I know where it was last which was 381ECSS (Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron?) at RAAF Williamtown.

Just found this image on the Facebook page for 381ECSS, but doesn't help with TAC signs. Photo might help anyone who is looking for it.
