6x6 Assault Pioneer
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:29:09 PM »
Does anyone have any in-service pics of the 6x6 Assault Pioneer and/or Infantry Mobility vehicles? I've pored over my old copies of Australian Defender, but there's nothing I've found.

Ones with eight seats in the back have been auctioned off as "Mortar Carriers".

I thought only the mortar carriers had been auctioned off as that.  The mortar carriers have 6 sideways and 2 rear facing seats in a forward compartment for maps, calculations etc.

The IIMV originally had 8 (4 on each side) sideways seats in the back.

What is the seating configuration for the Pioneer Assault so that I know what to look for in photographs?

Is there any other unique mods to this vehicle?

There are more variants for the 6x6 Perentie than there are for the 4x4. The original 1988 6x6s were either fitted with an aluminium tray (GS Cargo) or a fibreglass box body (Ambulance, GMV, etc). While the fibreglass box is probably a bit tougher, neither featured a ROPS.

In 1996, Project Bushranger called for a design of a rear body that was both modular for a variety of configurations and structurally designed as a ROPS. The "Bushranger" vehicles look similar on the outside with vinyl roll-up sides and jerry can storage across the rear.

The basic model is the Interim Infantry Mobility vehicle. This has 4 outward facing seats down each side. It has a transverse storage compartment across the front of the interior. Some examples of this vehicle have a roof hatch at the front directly above the storage compartment.

The Mortar Carrier carries two 81mm Mortar crews and their Mortars. It features 3 sideways seats down each side and 2 rear facing seats in the "Plotting Post" in a separate room at the front. It has clamps on the floor to restrain 2 81mm mortars and their legs and baseplates. There are storage compartments beneath the 2 seats in the Plotting Room.

The Direct Fire Support Weapons vehicle features 2 side facing seats and various cages and compartments for storage of equipment and ammunition. There are clamps and brackets to retain GPMGs and AAWs. There is a roof hatch at the front of the body and a GPMG pintle mount on the roof.

The Assault Pioneer vehicle features 2 sideways facing seats on each side and various storage cages and compartments for storage of equipment. The storage is the same as used in the Fire Support vehicle, but arranged in a different layout.

While the Air Defence 6x6 appears at first glance to be another variant of the Bushranger ROPS body, it is based on the aluminium tray of the GS Cargo truck and has no roll-over protection.

Yup. In fact got much more gear than the inspection report said was on the vehicle. Bonus!
