Diana's Mk3 Inter, 170-437 - Wazza
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:06:58 PM »
He was a Army truck, then he was a bush fire truck and he came to me from Warwick.

Many of you know I have a Mk3, ages ago I started prepairing it for a re-paint, then life got in the way.

Anyhow, in the recent few weeks I've been concentrating on to to the almost exclusion of all the other projects.  Although I must admit I did move the buggy to the chook shed on Saturday.

Sometime in the dreamtime I made the decision to remove all the two-pack RFS orange paint from the Mk3, prior to the re-paint.  This one decision has made what could have been a simple task into my current marathon. Today I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This weekends work involved undoing all the mountings on the tray, jacking up the tray and installing runners and rollers between the tray and the chassis rails.  I then rolled the tray back about 18" from the cab.  This one operation allowed me to get between the cab and tray and meant that within a few hours I was able to remove all the orange from the rear of the cab, sand and etch prime any bare metal.  Then I turned around and was able to remove all the orange from the front of the tray, sand and similarly etch prime that.

I've removed the mudguards and extensions from the side and rear of the cab and all the bolts and clips poking through the rear of the cab.  Basically it's now ready for primer coat. The next job is to remove the remains of the orange paint, this is mostly on the underside of the sun visor/extension of the roof and a few traces on seals and the window class.  After that, with help from a friend is the removing the hollow from the roof and MIG'ing up a couple of pin holes and prepairing the fibreglass bonnet for paint.

Maybe by Christmas, I'll have a completely green truck!  8)

A little history.

At initial purchase.

Removing the fire fighting equipment.

Tripod mounted tray (before being removed)

Restoration of dropside and tailgate hinges.

A couple more (fragment) images from about 12 months ago.

Since these images were taken, all the RFS orange visible front and rear has gone, the bonnet has has a sealer/indicator coat applied so the areas needing repair/filling can be identified and the doors and lower guards have had a coat of OD.

I've even removed most of the gear stored on the tray.  ::)

Looking much better than RFS red. You are lucky the interior of cab was left green, quite a few RFS trucks did have their interiors painted.

No Mk3 Christmas present.  :(

My mate who's going to do the panel repairs has been unwellso the roof repairs will have to wait till mid January.

May end up painting up to the gutter line.

BTW: no red left.

Thanks for the encouraging comments.  :) A special shout out to Chazza who made me some replica rear tac sign holders.   8) (piccies later)

Do I feel stupid today.  :-[

To recap on the last few weeks, I didn't make it to Menangle. too many little jobs and not enough time, so instead of going to the Muster I decided to strip down thee rear and re-paint it. so I removed the Narva lamps and scrapped off the numerous layers of white paint off the tool boxes and the black paint off the rearr of the chassis and tow plate.

Reminder photo.

Anyway have decided to leave the rear mostly green with only the bumperettes, light buckets and swinging mud flaps white.  So thats all been done and now the build up is back on.

Now to my stupidity, after military service 170-437 went into service with Gloucester Shire Council as a fire tanker, apart from the diesel conversion the RFS also fitted a Maxi-brake system to the handbrake mechanism.  This was disconnected to overhaul the wheel cylinders. Disconnecting was easy, start engine. get air pressure up, release maxi-brake and remove the clevis pins from the linkages. Reinstalling them should have been the reverse of above, but I couldn't get the clevis within 75mm of the hole in the lever.   After lots of  head scratching came to the conclusion that the maxi-booster had failed, so went and purchased a new one and fitted it up, with same result then decided that the compressor had failed or something, so to test the system, I made up a line to supply air pressure from the workshop 150psi system.  This time without the noise of the engine I could hear air leaking from the trailer  emergency supply, upon investigating I found the trailer valves open and with the cover leavers off for re-painting air was venting to atmosphere.  Any wonder I couldn't get any more than 35psi up in the system.

Shut the valves and everything works fine.   I guess I'll now have more confidence in the condition of the maxi-brake booster.

But I do feel like an idiot.

It's a credit to your efforts Diana. Did you recreate the door markings?

Yes the door markings have been applied as have the BWD and tailgate signs, there are even some red rats on the drivers and passenger doors as well as inside and outside the hatch.  8)

Still have some electrical gremlins, mainly that the junction box between the screens became disconnected and am trying to sort out which yellow wire is what function. The big worry is the black wire which is active on IGN.  I always thought black was ground??? However all the lights and legal requirements work so its fit for the road.

The seat frames are in place (they really need new timbers, but have been painted and replacements on the to-do list). The hood sticks will go on tomorrow morning after it drives out of the shed and I'll fit on a Unimog tarp until I can get a proper Inter tarp.  The plan is to drive it up to Warrimoo tomorrow in case there are any mechanical issues and to be in place for the Long Tan commemoration on the Sunday.

I promise photos after the parade.
