Unit names that may be in log books or marked on vehicles.
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:02:06 AM »
Thinking it may be usefull to have a thread to list vehicle markings that would equate to unit names or abbreviations, particularly those from a vehicle's log book.

What is "1JSU Enoggera" and would it have vehicle markings?

Thanks Phoenix

The trailer has the christmas tree 5974 for 1 Sigs Regiment but has 1JSU in the log book, so one would assume 1 Sigs allocated the trailer to 101 Sigs Sqn and perhaps it went to the Solomons with RAMSI.  Will have to study the photos for the Solomons.

So if it went to RAMSI with either 547 Sigs Tp or 101 Sigs Sqn would its christmas tree be changed from the 1 Sigs Rgt?

Which Tac/Formation signs would it have worn?

Damnit, I always raise more questions than answers.

Ok, solomons wasn't UN, so no UN plates, but beyond that, I'm not sure!

The Christmas Tree would represent the address to which the trailer was being sent and nothing else.
These things do not signify the parent unit, but are merely a "postal address" for want of a better / simpler explanation used by the Movement Control people at a particular point in time, to assist in their job of moving stuff around the world.
To simplify things even further, Diana, if you are allocated the number, "1234", and I want to send a trailer to you, I mark it "1234" and it gets to you. No one outsides those who allocate the numbers really have any inkling as to who 1234 is, so the movement is relatively secure from prying eyes, and the fact that it is me lending you my trailer, to outside eyes, is irrelevant and not mentioned, unless I put my mark on the trailer. What you do with it once you get it is besides the point.
Don't put too much importance on Christmas trees, as I have said earlier in another post, I have seen serving vehicles with three entirely different "trees" and numbers still visible on them.
Regards
Glen

Hi Glen

Along the same lines, if the trailer was being shipped to the Solomons, wouldn't it have a Christmas tree for it.  Although thinking about the shipping, it may be that the Christmas Tree was actually it being shipped back to 1 Sigs Regt from RAMSI.

(not my trailer by the way)

If thats the case would 1 JSU/1 Sigs Regt still wear the 40 serial on their tac?

My friend wants to get it correct.

Thanks I'm assuming you mean red 40 on a white/blue tac.

I'll let my friend know.

Just to be clear:

1 Sig Regt became 1JSU, but subsequently changed back to 1 Sig Regt. 101 Sig Sqn is a sub unit and in the very near future 145 Sig Sqn will also come under command when its parent unit (17 Sig Regt) is disbanded.

17 Sig Regt has previously been known as Land Force Signal Unit (LFSU) and before that 2 Sig Regt. 145 Sig Sqn has been a sub unit throughout this history from its days in Sth Vietnam.
