Hi Mike

I don't doubt your information in the slightest, as I said my money is on you (for accuracy).  My comment about inside knowledge was an attempt at mirth, not very successfully, acknowledging the significant time and effort you have spent researching these things.

The bit about being a gambler was only on the image, if the only evidence we had was the image manipulated by Tommy, one could be forgiven thinking the number could be 569, but as you have said we'd be wrong.

What I don't understand is how such simple words of mine, uttered without malice or intent can be construed as being a challenge to others.  I'm truly sorry if I came across that way, it was not and is not intended.  I appreciate your information greatly.

Knowing that there are 28 more contractors above the 36 we knew about, is good information.

Thank You.

And I suppose we should also remember that Army were not the only government operators of the Contractor. Dept of Supply were operating at least one (registration ZSS-093) in 1967/68, painted green with white roof. Bonnet emblem was 'Scammell'. It was one of two heavy-lift vehicles used to move the two 'Sheridans' from the Melbourne Docks to ADE Maribyrnong at the beginning of the trials. The other tractor was a much earlier model Leyland, registration C-70780.

And this is another ex-Army Leyland Contractor in Western Sydney.

Aparently it can be operated from the drivers position or via a remote control.

At least it donated it's unused winch to one for restoration.

Those two B&W photos show two different Contractors. Note the different tails on the camel logos. Note also that the first photo in post #19 shows the same camel logo on that Contractors door. It also has the side engine cover panel in situ.

Hi Tommy

Would you have any more images of the middle truck in this three?

Steve and I are trying to identify the type of lamps in the bumper bar and whether they are 7" regular reflectors i.e. Hi Beam only or some sort of after market addition like fog lamps etc.

Hi Tommy

It's pretty hard to see if they are regular headlamp reflectors or lamps similar to the Hella ones with the plastic covers at the top, but thanks for trying.

This is the only image I've seen of an in-service truck with the original headlamp hole filled with some sort of lamp at all.  One thinks they would only be good for fog lamps or for lighting the sides of the road and not long range spotties.  Steve will be please however.

Diana  :)

The lamps in the Bumper are driving lamps.

The lamps in the Bumper are driving lamps.

I think you may be right Juddy. The two bumper lights would probably be used to increase the illumination over and above the standard main beam. The Hella spotties were probably installed on the truck to give the truck long distance illumination for country night driving. Interestingly, the photo of the three Contractors show them to be in what looks to me like fairly thick foggy conditions. Maybe the three Contractors have pulled over due to lack of safe visibility. You would think that if the lamps in the bumper were fog lights, they would be on (as the main lamps are on).
