Discovered on Farm: LRPV 175-196
« on: May 11, 2013, 10:46:29 PM »
G'day all

Another LRPV found and acquired/saved :D

Tuesday just gone, I came across this advertisement on Gumtree. I immediately identified the Land Rover as a S3 FFR. The square cut guard drew my attention as did the patches of colour on it. A closer look showed they were off an LRPV :).

After telephoning the seller, I discovered that the S3 FFR was purchased from another farmer in the district. It was this farmer who replaced the S3 outer guard panels with the LRPV set. So today, I journeyed out country to track down the LRPV.

Following the directions on a dodgy 'mud map', I finally discovered ex SASR Mk3 LRPV 175-196 sitting in the corner of a farmers shed. As with my last acquisition 179-520, this LRPV ARN is unknown to me and does not appear on the REMLR LRPV ARN list. It is therefore a 'new' LRPV. This discovery now takes the known total of 'confirmed' S2A LRPVs to 31 and Mk3 model to 9.

After meeting the farmer in question, I was able to acquire the LRPV. And just in time as he was converting/rebuilding the Land Rover for his 'P' plate daughter (as her first car) :o. This is why the front panels etc have been removed. To secure the two LRPV outer guard panels on the S3, I also acquired that vehicle.

175-196 is a rare FFT, is mostly complete, retains it's original motor and electronic ignition, is driveable and has only the boxed tailgate, drop down spare wheel holders, ROPS bar cut down and a few small parts missing. Thankfully, it retains it's very rare original Thomas winch. This LRPV is the first I have seen with this make of winch still in situ.
Bulkhead is rust free and body panels are remarkably straight. The blue paint is quite thin and apparently easy to remove if need be. The original camouflage paint is still extant under this blue coat.

Although the photos below show a rather sad looking LRPV due to the part dismantlement by farmer, it is in very good condition and will require minimal reproduction of missing parts to see it back to original state.

I intend to retrieve the LRPV and S3 in the coming weeks.

As found.

Chassis number.

175-196....109....1969....Series 2A....6006....Truck, Utility, 3/4 Ton, GS, Fitted For Transmission....25338127K....25329134D....Perth auction.   08.01.92

Interestingly, the disposal date is January 8, 1992. This date matches the date of an LRPV auction at Mt Claremont. Other LRPVs sold at this auction were -

1992, 8 Jan : 178-191 (Mk1) + 174-323 (Mk2) + 179-500 (Mk2 late S2A) + 179-502 (Mk2 late S2A) + 180-899 (Mk2 late S2A) + 172-436 (Mk3) + 178-432 (Mk3)

Whilst I was at the farm, I did some scrounging and turned up some original parts off the LRPV. In another shed on the property I found the door mounted brush deflection guards.

Original bonnet, guards and rims/tyres.

I even found the rear diff helper springs on a fire fighting trailer.

Wow, congrats on doing the legwork all the way from a Gumtree advert showing a single panel on that S3.
Great story. Sort of thing you see written up in magazines. Made my day.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the comments :).

This new discovery may actually be an LRPV that was rumoured to be on a property in Toodyay, one hours drive north east of Perth.

Apparently the LRPV in question was used on a property to collect rocks so they could be sold on the open market. Toodyay is famous for it's 'Toodyay Stone'. This strong and aesthetically appealing stone was used in the construction of many old colonial buildings around the state and is still used today.

When I quizzed the farmer in relation to the history of his LRPV, he told me that he bought it from a car dealership in Toodyay many years ago. Apparently it sat in the yard for close to a year without finding a buyer. He thinks that the LRPV was on consignment from a local and not owned by the dealership.

When the farmer bought 175-196 from the dealership, it had a bulldozer blade mounted to the front bumper. The steel plate blade was mounted to the bumper and a hand operated single hydraulic actuator was centrally attached to a plate under the rock guard. You can see the plate in the 'As Found' photo in post #1 of this thread. The blade was simply dropped or raised by hand pumping the actuator.  As it was of no use to the farmer, he removed the blade and placed it near his scrap heap.

It is this blade and the fact that the LRPV came from Toodyay that makes me think that the mystery Toodyay LRPV has now been found.

The farmer is a Land Rover nut like us all. Here are some photos of his Landy wrecks. Part of the LRPV purchase deal was that I could have any military parts that I find on the property. If anyone sees something they want, let me know.

Main Landy shed.

Military tub side seats buried under junk.

Early military bonnet.

Front chassis cut from S3 FFR.

FFR battery box racks.

I want to know more of the toodyay lrpv mystery story!!

The mystery Toodyay LRPV was one of those vehicles you know exists but can't be found :(.

Around 1991/92, at least four LRPVs were purchased from disposal auction by Joe of Morley Four Wheel Drive. At his workshop, he removed the SASR mods which would have prevented him from licencing the vehicles. These mods included the drop down 'bat wing' spare wheel holders on the Mk3 and the spare wheel holders across the door opening on the Mk2. By removing these mods, doors could be reinstalled. To add some weather protection, Joe had 'truck cab' soft tops made for each LRPV. He painted a couple of the LRPVs and left others in their original camo paint.

Joe's LRPVs were eventually sold and disappeared into the private market. One of his LRPVs eventually passed into the hands of a Toodyay local who was rumoured to have used the Land Rover to haul rocks out of his property/farm. It was said that a lifting arm (with block and tackle) was constructed out of steel tube/RHS to lift the rocks. This lifting arm utilised the tub machine gun pedestal mount to support it. It looked a bit like the Land Rover wrecker setup.

REMLR member Cliffy and I have known about this LRPV for some time. Cliffy had originally heard of the Toodyay LRPV through the rumour mill. We have both spent time searching for the LRPV but to no avail.

I'm yet to confirm that my new discovery is infact the Toodyay LRPV. If it isn't, the search will continue.

Picked up 175-196 today.

Reassembled and ready to go.

Used the farm tractor to push it on (carefully and without damage).

Good result - the engine/driveline is a non goer because... or is it trailered because of rego hassles?
