108-609 "PISTON BROKE"
« on: April 15, 2013, 07:18:21 PM »
Hi,

my new project is 2A workshop 108-609

Truck, Lightweight, Workshop, 3/4 Ton, 4x4, C.S. Land Rover, Series 11A, 109WB

not sure what the C.S. means - any idea?

No census on plate, but database says Automotive repair

above front wheel with black background is PISTON BROKE

and has large rooster holding a spanner on both doors

so now with the two incomplete workshops I can now fully complete one.

Enjoy the photos,

What are the brackets under the rear wheel arches?

Regards
Scott

What would the holes be for only on left hand side?

  Hi Scott,
the CS on the data plate should read GS, looks like it has been scratched out a bit. The census should be on the same plate - it is only printed, so maybe it has been worn off.
As for the door markings, during the late 60's there was a very common army saying - "UP THE RED ROOSTER --- AND MORE PISS".  I would suggest that this is a RAEME interpretation of that.  Also, "PISTON BROKE" was common slang for a drunk Digger or Crafty on off-pay week. (pissed and broke)
   I also have 2x 2A workshops, a 1965 census 6238 (ARN 113-802) and a 1971 census 6043A (ARN 178-032).
Thanks for sharing photos ;) :D ;)

This is on a truck at Bandiana

exactly the same as on my workshop, I'll have to go back and have a better look and ask a few more questions

Thanks Cookey, many years ago when I did a bit of shearing PISTON BROKE was also a common saying, until we cut out the shed and got paid up!

Hello Scott,

That's a good looking workshop, love the markings,

As far as I can work out the brackets under the wheel arches were for the tent pegs that had the full loop near the head, the spike end would have fit into the hole and the loop would have gone over the rail, I don't have any of the pegs but have seen them before.

Regards
Justin.

after I bit of haggling and a bit of dealing I am now the owner of this vehicle.
I managed to get it going and it runs quite sweetly, just have to get it home and start the tidy up.
first thing on the list of bits is to make a mock frame for the tub and straighten the deck out ready to weld it back together, there's quite a few cracks between the rear cross member and the wheel arch boxes.

Hi John, we are both working on them, Adrian has started in readiness for a trip next year. I managed to source a couple of truck cab canvases to sort at least the cab out, between us we have enough parts for patterns and replacements.
I have quite few parts to refit from other donors as the truck doesn't look like the earlier photos.
I hope to clear a few carcasses out of my yard to fit this one in, time to get the scrap skip in!

Hi All,

The saying " up the red rooster and drink more piss" was a saying (phrase) used by engineers at 21 Construction based at Puckapunyal up until the 90's - 2000's. 21 Construction Squadron were the red roosters. As stated previously the chicken with the spanner is the RAEME variant used by their workshop troop.

I don't think the unit is on the ORBAT anymore.

Well it took a little longer than expected, but I have finally got this truck home safely. time to sit down and make a list of what is required to put it back together, basically its a runner as is, just have to find a bit of the fruit that is missing all round.
Thanks to Alan for the workshop tub frame.
