I have noticed that the early mk3's had smooth hubs.
The later mk3's/trucks had hubs with lumps on them.
Does anyone know why and was anything
Else changed?

All the Mk 3s had the smooth hubs when manufactured. The reinforced hubs as they were known were introduced on the 6X6 trucks and were also used on the Mk 4s. Many Mk 3s that were rebuilt had the later hubs and some had a mixture of both types. In later photos of the Mk3 prototype there are reinforced hubs visible so they were trialing them at at early date. There must have been some failures for the design to change. There don't appear to be any other changes, bearings etc are the same.

Were the rear hubs round as well?

Yes, the front and rear hubs were identical as were many parts. The stub axles, prop shafts even the springs were the same, only the rears had a helper pack on top, All in the name of containing cost.

Can you put a front diff in the rear aswell?

The diffs can be interchanged BUT you MUST change the oil scoops so it gets lubricated properly.

The hubs with ribs on them are cast steel,and were made by IEL Rockwell in SA.....I have seen the smooth hubs broken,through the inner bearing seat ,into two neat pieces,each with a bearing in it. .......but broken by the bush rock crowd,who did abuse their trucks.
