I have fitted avm fwhs on the rear diff of my 6x6, not completely happy with the build quality of the AVM ( even after modifications), are there any other alternatives available. thanks for any help dave.

A few of us are experiencing the same thing especially with the oil leak problem. I have taken mine off until I can organise a better sealing arrangement. Afaik there is no other alternative brand.
-
Thanks for your reply, that is disappointing, I did find that replacing the rubber seal with a viton o ring stopped the oil leaking.
-
I also had leaking AVM hubs, tried o-rings but to no avail. Final solution is a bit left of field but works brilliantly, the square seals out of a 50mm plumbing trap, they fit perfectly, are a snug fit in the ali housing and DON'T leak. Had mine in for a month now and not a drop has escaped!

Hi Dihusky, you will need to keep an eye on them, a plumbing seal will be affected by oils / solvents and will fail but left of field is the right approach. I assume you are also fitting to 6x6, the other issues I have had is the woful little screws on the outside housing which I retaped with larger allen screws, the other issue I had was on returning from the last trip I saw that they had been hammered by rocks from the front wheels so I sikaflexed a steel sleeve over them, I think I maybe on top of it now. Dave.

I am surprised that people have had issues with these AVM hubs.
In 1978 I fitted a set to the front of my Series 1 86 that was my every day driver from 1979 to 1985 and it never leaked. I guess that over the years internal components changed and the newer seals are not as good as they were 40 years ago.

Hi Garry, the hubs haven't changed and they wouldn't normally be a problem when fitted to the front end but fitted to the rear axle the diff oil flows into the hub. Dave.

I think the biggest problem is the plastic bit that you turn to engage. The old ones were alloy I seem to remember.
-
Do you think the plastic center would be a std size on any avm hubs.
-
Yes the old AVM hubs had alloy centres and my swivel hubs and wheel bearings were converted to run with oil - I think that if the new ones have plastic components then maybe the AVM hubs are no longer the quality item they once were hence the leak problems.
I do agree with the comments re oils etc on hardware grade rubber fittings - however it is the basis of getting the same style of seal/o ring from an industrial supply place that is rated for use in oil.
