Title: Currawong, the Parakeet replacement
Post by: AGAS 5 on June 29, 2017, 10:30:17 PM
Parakeet was the communication network that was carried on the back of some of the Perentie 6x6.  Boeing Defence Australia is building the replacement network - Currawong.

AGAS 5, thanks an interesting announcement. Appears to be a major commitment to a next gen comprehensive coms system. Does this mean that the radio equipment from Harris and Raytheon would be replaced or more a software upgrade for compatibility with this new network?

No it doesn't replace them.

The Harris and Raytheon radios form part of the Tactical Communications Network (TCN). They replaced the old TCN radios such as RAVEN, WAGTAIL, PINTAIL and the AN/PRC-77. TCN radios can be characterised as being man packable. ie carried on the soldier.

CURRAWONG forms part of the Battlfield Telecommunications Network (BTN) and it replaced PARAKEET.  BTN equipment can be characterised as being in modules that fit on the back of light or medium vehicles such as G-Wagen 6x6 (single module) or the Mann trucks (2 modules).... they are relatively large Comms equipment.

Cheers.

AGAS 5 thanks for the insights to this new battlefield technology. Could one expect that in a conflict situation if satellites were knocked out (in a serious conflict with a capable adversary) the military would revert to more conventional terrestrial coms?

Would be interesting to see what back up plan there is in place it digital signals are compromised.  I was reading that  National Command Authority still use sealed envelopes for the nuclear launch codes, a very old system is used that is not connected to the outside word for fear of hacking, a old system that needs a urgent upgrade but to what?

Along with Currawong and Parakeet, there is the top secret Toucan system. It's cleverly carried in Rat Packs and Boots to avoid detection. A Platoon of Infantry can quickly assembly the terminals with 60 bootlaces to have secure communication over distances of up to 50m. Codedsay datasay encryptionsay is alsosay availablesay.

I don't think that 303 Gunner's idea will work too well. You can't get the good boot laces any more :)

I'm very satisfied with the outcome... for me it was a 7 year investment  8)
