Lots of FFRs, aerials, a Command APC, tons of RAE Macks 6x6 on a largish construction site with its own concrete plant. Probably some dozers and other plant there somewhere as well.

The Commodore and the Datsun would help date this.. and those alpine looking housing blocks... interesting.

Somewhere in Canberra?

Strange to see a round rear vision mirror on a Series 3 as well....

VB or VC Commodore. They were produced around '79 - '81.
Photo would have been the early eighties.

The FFR has a Armour Corps unit tac.

The buildings up the back are too young for RMC I think.
ADFA fits the time zone, it was being built (opened in 1984) and it has a overdose of bare concrete buildings, very East-German chic (but not quite like the ABS buildings etc in downtown Belconnen). But I don't think the hill fits at all.

Hi boys, if I was to bet , I'd say Puckapunyal , terrain and unit points that way. Buildings don't look familiar though.

The quarry set up looks civie and the Macks are flatbed trucks probably transporting the carriers ?

Just my two cents

RMC didn't get macks until 84/85 It resembles Sam Hill it was just a bare hill in 80 and about the only place in Australia the military could work without upsetting the unions at the time

Nah mate,

Don't think so, no buildings like that there , I know it's changed a bit now but not back in the early 80's were there any buildings like that.

Cheers,

Mick

RAAC and TRG COMD tactics plates I don't know of many places they would be accociated with a building site in the mid 80s

That's true , I'm unsure whether the buildings are barrack blocks or not but I definitely don't think it's SWBTA.

Where else did the school of armour train back then other than Pucka ?

I was thinking that very thought Pete. You might be on the money there.

Good work,

Gedday men, ah that'd be me  :) I doubt it's Buller, too many trees on the hill.(they're not snow gums). There's nothing behind its so it's the highest point and the summit of Buller is above the tree line.  I'll look into it though to be sure.

Nice deduction though  ;)

If only the LH FFR was more visible, it might be 30-128!

Buller has been cleared a lot for infrastructure, I had been thinking it was there or Mt Baw Baw with which I am not familiar. The closed up civvie & mil vehicles and the skifield type buildings suggested somewhere high in VIC to me. Buller is nice and close to Pucka.

Aye, the closeness to Pucka certainly doesn't rule it out, that's why I'm not completely certain. I'll check with the Resort Management Board.

Any one thought of doing a google street view search of the suggested locations?

Thredbo perhaps ?

I did a couple of Ration resupply runs to the 'Army Alpine Lodge - Thredbo' in the early 1980's to maintain a reliable beer supply to officers on adventure training there.

Seriously we're talking a DO913 with the cargo tray full of pallet end VB etc !

That was late 1984 or 1985

Cheers

Hi all

Does this vehicle still survive today or maybe owned by a member on the forum ?

Have been asking around and spoke to a bloke who started a ski lodge up on Buller in the late 70s and he says it's definitely not Mt. Buller. He thought it might be in NSW or ACT?

The mystery deepens
