Title: Series 2A FFT ARN 114-051
Post by: Fargo on January 22, 2014, 09:47:30 PM
G'day
I thought I would post some photo's of the FFT I picked up off Gumtree last week. The previous owner said his father had bought it from an auction at Moorebank  16 years ago but ended up not doing much with it. I originally bought to use the rear cross member but since having a good look at it may be a better restoration project instead. The bulkhead is shot and the radiator support panel is not much better. All of the radio gear has been removed except for the racks in the back but the other military gear is there.

Cheers Hugh

Nice score Fargo :). The S2A FFTs are fairly rare these days.

Any chance of posting a photo showing the racks in the back?

Good buying. Congratulations.
I have a strong hunch that one went for a trip to South Vietnam.

The chassis number is the clue to the ARN, not the supply contract number (116791).

I looked up the chassis number, its  ARN is 114-051

Thanks for the info Carzee. You are right the about the ARN  it matches the chassis and engine numbers. I am doing some work on the 2A this week end and will get some photo's of the racks as well for you Tommy.

Cheers Hugh

G'day
Tommy Pictures of the racks in the back of the FFT. Looks like I have the battery trays and that is it. The radio generator was on the vehicle but removed before the sale.

Cheers Hugh

That is more of the radio and battery racks than most people get, great find!

Not brilliant photos, but here are some pics of my old FFW and the fittings for some of the radio gear.

G'day
Thought I would update the progress of the restoration after a long period of no action. I have removed the front clip and started to remove everything bolted to the bulkhead. As the pictures depict the bulkhead is really shot. A few other details have appeared(tag on chassis). The original colour appears to have been bronze green under the olive drab.

Cheers Hugh

I agree Hugh, that bulkhead is cactus! Do you have another one to swap with it? 8)

Do you have any other photos of your tub battery frames?

They are exactly the ones I am after for my FFT 177 211. They look easy enough to make, if you could post up some more photos and maybe measurements, that would be great!

Cheers,

Mike.

G'day Mike
Next time I am down at my mates property where I store the 2A I will pull the racks out and measure them up. It may be a month or so though. Still looking for a bulkhead worth repairing.

Cheers Hugh

No worries Hugh, absolutely no rush.

Your battery frames are the first good complete pair that I have seen after a fair bit of looking. I think most of the FFTs were auctioned off without them, or if they were on the vehicle, they were the first thing to go in the bin when the new civi owner put the vehicle on the road!

So if we can work out exactly how they are welded together, we should be able to be able to remake some fairly easily. With a good diagram, we can hopefully make it available on the REMLR website for the future.

Good luck with the bulkhead search,

Cheers,
Mike.

Well after life getting in the way I have finally got back to the FFT.  Attached is a clear picture of the battery rack and the FFT less it bulkhead. Still looking for a replacement bulkhead that can be repaired. Drawing and more detailed pictures of the rack to follow

Cheers Hugh

Thanks for the battery frame photo Hugh,

It is interesting to see that the 2 battery holders are bolted to another frame that mounts to the tub, I didn’t know this lower bit existed.

Your chassis looks a lot better than the bulkhead, most have a bit of rust in the front dumbirons, but yours looks pretty good.

Looking forward to seeing some more updates!

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Hugh,
I just joined REMLR and was going through the motions of trying to find out the info and ARN of my FFR and as it turns out, it looks like a sister car to yours. Chassis number on mine is 6/66 built, 25316496C.  Guessing it was made with only 3 vehicles between them?
Same Contract number, (C116791) and Census Number, (6006A) as yours too too
My ARN is 114-033
Cheers,
Colin
